Gourds are a vegetable in the squash family. Unlike the squash, gourds are best left in the field until they have hardened and then harvested. We found that out the first year we planted and harvested too early which resulted in total loss. After harvesting we allow the gourds to dry out for about a year. When preparing to work with a gourd the
outer shell has to be cleaned of all dirt and grime. We then cut and clean out the inside of the gourd unless we decide to leave it whole. Now the gourd is ready to be dyed, painted, carved, or wood burned and embellished with waxed linen thread, pine needles and anything else our imagination brings to mind. Several coats of sealer are sprayed on all painted or dyed gourds and others depending on the final look we choose for that particular gourd. Gourds are not meant for use with liquids and should be kept dry. Decorated gourds should be kept out of bright light and wiped clean with a dry cloth. As with the walking sticks, no two gourds are exactly alike. When you choose a gourd from Tear N Eye Creations, you are choosing an original piece of art. If you choose a gourd that has already sold, we will attempt to duplicate your selection as closely as possible. Contact us to discuss the details. |
